SkateWorld has a long history with the tri-states. The skating rink has been in operation since the late 50's early 60's and throughout the years has been the place where the KIDS skate and meet their friends for a lifetime.
The early rink was named the Middlesboro Roller Rink ran by Howard Billingsley and later by John and Louise Ball. The only floor guard I knew was Buddy Fleming when we started skating in the 70's.
After John's passing, Louise and daughter, Vicki operated the rink until they sold it to Sandy Cosby and family of Middlesboro.
In 1988, the Hendrickson's, Steve and Helen, bought the rink from the Cosby's. During these transition times, my wife and I continued to skate at the center. Later in the year Steve and Helen offered us a partnership in the business. Then the infamous 1988 tornado hit downtown.
From that point until the new rink was re-opened, we worked day and night remodeling the skating center. In September the rink was re-opened to a history making attendance. In 1991 the Hendrickson's sold their interest to Frank and Penny Smith which still owns and operates the skating center today.
